A Bit About Bill Altman
I'm a professor in the Psychology and Human Services Department at SUNY Broome Community College. My background is in Educational Psychology and Measurement, and my research interests are based in the Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoTL).
I was greatly humbled and honored in 2018, when The Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of the American Psychological Association) presented me with the Wayne Weiten Teaching Excellence Award.
I currently serve as one of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology's (STP) representatives to the American Psychological Association's Council of Representatives. I was elected to two terms as the Vice President for Resources for STP, and have also served STP by developing our Remembrances wiki, and as a consulting editor and reviewer for the academic journal Teaching of Psychology, the Coordinator of programming for the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (NITOP), the co-editor for the online blog/newsletter E-xcellence in Teaching, a contributor to the Teaching of Psychology Idea Exchange, and the associate editor and author of several other publications (available on the STP books web page).
I have earned Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Educational Psychology and Measurement, and an M.P.S. in Communication Arts from Cornell University. I also earned a B.A. in History from the University of Pennsylvania.
I'm driven by a wide and unpredictable curiosity, an almost pathological and sometimes annoying need to solve problems of nearly any sort, and a sense that it all ought to be fun. My research cuts across many aspects of evidence-based teaching methods, learning, and testing.
In addition to scholarly publications and presentations, I've written for several non-scholarly publications, spent over a decade sharing information about education and psychological science on local radio, been a professional photographer, and performed in theater and as a standup comic (ostensibly to work on classroom presentation skills, but mostly because it's fun). I assisted the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in developing their training manual for nuisance wildlife control operators and in creating and validating their statewide licensing test.
I consult on the development of effective teaching materials and techniques, as well as contributing to and editing textbooks and ancillary materials..
I also provide training in teaching and learning, and I'm happy to speak to all sorts of groups about teaching, learning, and how psychological science can help make people's lives better.
